Optoma HD20 1080p Home Projector goodness for the budget-minded!

I first wrote this comment in another site, and now that I've had more time with this projector I have added and changed some things and I am replacing the review Amazon. I think more people will look to Amazon to buy this projector, especially since the other site is no more cattle. Hopefully this review helps those of you who are on edge about buying this projector.

Pros: Good looking, white satin finish. Low fan noise in normal bulb. 4000 hours Lamp life economies is greater than most projectors! Good enough for use on how to use with bright lights in the room. In the dark it just unbelievable!

looks very good 1080p content. Blu-rays play on a PS3 (or blu-ray player) look awesome. I saw Kung-Fu Panda was "astonished" by what you may see a much larger screen. I just saw Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen on him last night and I was surprised was in the details and I noticed things that did not even notice when I saw it in IMAX. This could have been because in IMAX you have such an incredibly huge screen forget some things that might not have noticed before and you have to turn your head to actually look at the entire screen. However, the Blu-ray is amazing to see with this projector. I find it very hard to believe you can buy this for under $ 1000.

Video games look awesome. It works well with PS3 and 360 consoles. You get a great advantage over other players when you can see in the distance before they could see on a normal HDTV. This, of course, everything depends on the size of the screen you use. I'm using a 92 "diagonal screen blank by EliteScreens. Not the largest screens, but I will succeed for a year or two until you get the money for a good, fixed screen.

By using my PS3 to my tv I got the RGB color spectrum limited scope in the display options in the PS3. On television, with the creation in full would be too dark and black out details in the shadows too. This projector can turn the whole series and use across the spectrum and will give you better blacks and whites in this way. If you place the projector on the light environment preset (lamp mode is high), then you can go blind by whites this thing is capable of in the dark. really bright environment should be used only when you have lots of atmosphere light to fight. Otherwise, film, reference, or your own custom settings with the help of a calibration disk is probably the best.

There are lots of options for adjusting brightness, contrast, sharpness, etc. Anything that you find in high-definition television now seems to be an adjustment that can change here. Personally I think that cinema is about the perfect way for use in dark environments where you can quench all the light and enjoy a movie. The sharpness is used differently in this projector? It is in many of HDTV. With my tv took the sharpness to zero, because everything he was doing was adding pixels to make the photo appear sharper and will take away from the realism of the image. In this projector the default is 7 and if you are really low softening the image and going negative with the effect of sharpening. I found the sweet spot to be 10. The value 10 I am extremely sharp and defined text in all my games and the picture looks better with this setting then the default value of 7. Anything below 7 turn too soft and blurry eyes … like looking through a water covered the windshield.

The Optoma has automatic shutoff that can be adjusted. By default I think it is off. I set mine for 15 minutes. This function will automatically shut off the projector after no signal detected "xx" number minutes. Very useful if you are not the only one using the projector and have fears of friends and family leave it on.

Disadvantages: I have been accustomed to use a Samsung 46 "LN46A650 model TV, and then going to this, there is a very distinct difference in black level. You will not get deep blacks with this projector it can in a good HDTV, but fortunately not ruin the experience. Black level detail is there, which is good, just not in a inky black. It is rather a very dark shade of gray. I messed around with the Digital Video Essentials Blu-ray for contrast and brightness settings for a while. Not was able to get all the line-graph to display. Either would be too washed white and too bright, or dark would be too dark and strength white sections of the dark. The projector seemed ready with the correct settings outside the box on the film.

Do not waste time over menu as the gamma, and movie modes, or try to change the colors yet. I am not experienced in self-calibration, so do not take my word for it, but I could not get the contrast much better than it already is out of the box.

Auto-focus would have been a good choice. Not a big deal if you get this projector mounted and not have to keep moving it. You can simply find the right spot and leave it there, and it should be fine. On that note, if you are thinking about leaving this in a coffee table it will probably work well. At first, I tried to mount this projector platform to save having to buy a stand ceiling. I was about 5 meters above ground level and could not get an image that was happy. The angle I had to turn down the legs backward spread so completely and then add a couple fine-cd boxes to increase further back. Key adjustments to the end and was still off and looked like a trapezius. Unless you are going to use it within 3 feet from the floor, I would expect that the ceiling mount this baby! There's your warning to any question about this.

None of my shots against a star of my rating of this wonderful product however. You can not really say too many negative things in a projector 1080p for <$ 1000!

I'm very glad I bought this! At first I was worried that 92 "might be too big for me, sitting about 9.5 m away, but having used one time, is perfect. The projector uses up a 300 "screen, so I can not wait until I move in my first home and have a good area to settle for a 150 "screen! I think that would be the idea.

*** Update ***

I have now owned this for about five months, and I have yet to encounter any problems with it. I have over 300 hours of use on the bulb now. Once the focus has had adequate time to break in the (200 +) you will notice a better black level than when it was new. We have no complaints with the performance of this projector. Everything has been fantastic. You really get all of your moneys worth with this sub-$ 1,000 HD projector. I have not been in a movie in the theater throughout the year, and I was the guy who usually went almost every Friday. I can stay home and get the same experience now.
