The decal term is an abbreviated version of the word sticker. A decal is a decorative technique that images of prints and engravings artist could be transferred to decorate the stoneware.

The invention of the artist taking delivery of material and printing these images in a way decorate pottery is attributed to Simon Francis Ravenet. Simon was in France and was an engraver who emigrated to England and after arriving in England around 1750 was upgraded this transfer process.

This printing process of decorating pottery was imported to the U.S. around 1865. In the United States, this process became popular during the heat of the decoration of ceramics from the mid-1870s. In the United States, the decal word is reduced to the version we use today decal.

The decals are screen-printed today on a plastic substrate made from a adhesive to stick to surfaces. The plastic substrates are legion and a few are household terms, is known as vinyl (PVC AKA), clear Mylar ® or clear polyester is the generic name Mylar ®.

There are 3 (three) types of adhesives, the first is known as face-up sticker (impression industry jargon), also known as facing the back window sticker adhesive off assembly. The second is known as a decal face down (the jargon of the printing industry), also known as one face to face adhesive sticker in the window assembly. The third type is the double-sided sticker.

The first 2 (two) are the types of screen-printed stickers, a type of lasting impression in extreme conditions and resist fading for the sun. The 1 is the white vinyl sticker on your back can be used instead joined many windows, doors, cabinets, notebooks, bumper cars. The 2nd one is the transparent polyester is used for making a decal with adhesive on the face, so when the decal is applied inside the window or graphic image visible from outside the window.

The 3rd is double faced sticker is actually a combination of two (2) described above, using the white vinyl and transparent polyester printed today.

Up to half of the 1980s decals double-sided printed using only a transparent polyester product. The double-sided stickers this time was basically an accumulation of ink on one side of transparent polyester. The double-sided stickers has two images to be viewed through the adhesive side of the material and the 2nd image was printed through Image of the 1st. If the decal would be printed in red and blue on a white background and the message was "Hot Dogs are sold here, this post was the impression as a mirror image "sgoD DLO ereH toh" in clear polyester as seen through the tail of the image. The 2nd reading printed side is correct the same message "Hot Dogs are sold here," was printed on top of the message already printed, but with an opaque silver ink printed on the mirror image, so that the sticker would not be transparent. Because the inks are not fully opaque metallic silver ink is printed between the two images so that when the decal is placed in a window that you can not see through the decal.

In 1979-1980 lead was eliminated as a component of printing inks screen, by order of the Federal Government, screen printing inks had to be re-formulated without lead. When the screen printers use the new inks, without the component principal for the manufacture of double sided adhesives, inks and non-resilient to crack because the inks of the many layers of ink printed on top of each.

So a new technology was invented and this new product was not an ink but a material known as a barrier film. The barrier film is a slice adhesive plastic is completely opaque so you can not see through this film.

The screen on the printer uses this movie white vinyl barrier and prints on white vinyl decals are produced when white vinyl. Then, the printer prints the image clear polyester 2 as a mirror image of the printer and then laminated with clear polyester adhesive side of the barrier film, now that there are two sides to read properly.

Double decals facing a much cleaner presented in a window, because if a clear decal sticker vinyl or polyester is used and adhered the window of a shop or a house for each of these will have a large white field facing the inside of the store or at home. The decal is double-sided image of both parts, creating a nice piece of advertising.
