How can I fix the faucet in my shower? Two handled with a knob you pull up for shower water on the faucet.?

Okay. There is a knob on the actual faucet in the middle that diverts water to the shower head, which is also attached to the faucet by a hose. (This is an OLD house) The water has stopped diverting. The faucet still works, but not the shower. I have cleaned the shower head and hose out, so I know that’s not it. This is getting real old real fast. I just bought this place, and don’t have the money to hire a plumber, so I really need to do this myself.

ok. i was an apprentice plumber for a year or so, so i’ll take a stab at it:) what has probably happened is that the little tab attached to the knob has either rusted out completely, or else is so worn that it cant create enough back pressure to stay in the locked position.you will need to probably replace the old faucet with a new one – but be prepared for all sorts of stuff to go wrong once you start…the old faucet may be the type you can unscrew from the pipe. more likely it is soldered into place, which means an enormous amount of work better left to a professional. if you can unscrew it, then you can probably replace it with kit from home depot. just take the new faucet head, put some silicone tape around the threads, and screw on the new faucet. if you want the cheapest solution with the least expense and hassle, go to walmart to the showerhead section. down below all the overpriced peerless showerheads and doodads that dont work, you will find a little rubber hose affair, with a weird rubber elbow at one end, and a shower head at the other. you can buy this for about 8 bucks, go home, slip the rubber elbow firmly over the old faucet, and turn on the water. presto – instant new showerhead! not the prettiest or permanent – est solution, but it will get you by until you can find and afford a reputable plumber. go to appliance samurai.com to find a good one in your area! good luck!
